Mango Meetings: Embracing Innovation

What does it mean to work at Mango Languages? If you’re a Mango, you embrace six core values: quality, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, fundipline, integrity, and a positive attitude. And if you’re a Mango founder and CEO – well, you live it, you breathe it, and you inspire it in others.

On a dreary Tuesday morning in February (because every Tuesday in February is dreary), Jason Teshuba brought a bigger, brighter kind of meeting to Mango’s leadership team. He challenged the Mangos in the room to conduct all of their meetings and correspondence with each other in Spanish – whether they were fluent, proficient, or a newbie to Español. To some people, this would be a deal breaker. To a group of Mangos, it’s a fun, exciting challenge that they can’t wait to conquer. We’re kind of a crazy bunch.

But we’re not the only crazy ones. Our customers do it every day. As we fumble through meetings, trying our best to nail grammar, vocab, and still get out meaning across, our customers do the same – in libraries, schools, and homes across the world. Yes, we drop the occasional incidental Spanish expletive in front of our amazing new Marketing Director (we were trying to say that we think you’re “so cool!”) and sometimes our emails take us three times longer to compose than before – but it’s just so much FUN. We’re enjoying the journey to greatness, and we’re learning a ton along the way.

Spanish newbie and Mango Human Relations Extraordinaire Jessica Nanna channeled her inner language-lover to take on the new challenge. Already well-acquainted with the Romance Languages through her French and Italian studies, she gathered up her Spanish resources and hit the ground running. Consulting Mango programs, native speakers in the office, a Spanish-to-English dictionary, and even her four year old daughter, she embraced the new language immersion alongside the rest of Mango’s leadership team. The results? The team was more motivated and more success in language learning than ever before – and had a renewed excitement for the company’s mission to enrich lives with language and culture. Bonus: with her new Spanish skills, Jessica’s daughter now thinks that her mom is even cooler than Dora the Explorer. That’s high praise.

We’re so excited to find new ways to love on language. We’re just trying to keep up with our customers, and we love every minute of it. Whether we’re sharing buenas noticias, swapping vocabulario via email, or accidently dropping Spanish F-bombs, having fun is the Mango way. We promise to snap a few behind the scenes photos soon, and until then we’ll be taking the language learning adventure head-on. And if you ever want to drill us on past participle conjugation, we’ll be here.
