If you ask us, the month of February could use a little more sunshine, and celebrating Discover Languages month is the perfect way to brighten things up. Although this winter’s polar vortexes and arctic blasts have really, really awesome names, they’ve completely cleared our winter calendars. Adventuring and socializing are replaced with hibernation and huddling near the heaters – we’re in survival mode. But like a good book, language allows you to escape into another world, and now is the perfect time peace out from winter for a minute and experience a new language, culture, or country.
In honor of Discover Languages Month, we’ve set up a language and learning guide for the month of February, designed specifically to deliver some much needed fun and excitement when you most need it. February just got a lot better.
Choose your language.
First thing, you’ve got to make some difficult choices. When it comes to discovering a new language, there are so many great ways to start. Take Buzzfeed’s “What City Should You Actually Live In?” quiz to help narrow down the culture and language that best matches your personality and lifestyle – plus, you get to choose your favorite hashtag. Somehow, #discoverlanguages isn’t a choice – you’ll have to settle for your second favorite.
Another fun and easy way to explore a new culture: log on to Mango Premiere and watch a movie in a new language. We currently have 20 movies in 7 different languages, available to libraries across North America with a full Mango subscription. If there’s one thing February is good for, it’s hunkering down in a pile of blankets to watch movies. Still not sure which language you’re drawn to most? Use your Mango account to click through over 60 languages from around the world – when one grabs your interest, you may be able to take a placement course to find the best place to start. You’re ready to enter a whole new world.
Discover a new you.
Now that you’ve begun the journey, it’s time to come to terms with the new person you are becoming. As you work your way through your Mango Passport course, you’ll notice that the new language is starting to show up in your life in…unexpected ways. We have to warn you: you may be well on your way to becoming a Crazy Language Lover; second only to the Crazy Cat Lady. Cats are awesome, and we’re okay with taking second place as long as websites like this keep existing. Make sure you click “Make It Rain” in the corner.
Enjoy the perks.
What we’re trying to say is that you are now part of an elite group: language lovers. Embrace your new life and all the perks that come with it. Every aspect of your life is a little brighter, a little better now. Have you updated your LinkedIn account with your new language skills? Rack up those endorsements by sharing your new skill-set with your social network. Had your eye on your buddy’s German friend, but unable to overcome the language barrier? Those days are over; second-language small talk is now the name of your game.
Procrastinate in two languages.
Feel like you’ve seen every viral video known to man? Tap into popular videos from around the world. Last year, the most watched video in Japan featured the cast and crew of pop group AKB48 breaking it down behind the scenes, and it’s hilariously fun. For something more nostalgic, check out these videos of “10 Disney Songs Sung in their Characters Native Tongues,” and learn to sing along to Disney classics in a whole new way – all while practicing your new language.
Connect with the world.
You’ve picked the language, you’re mastering conversation skills left and right, you’re all caught up on the videos, movies, and celebrity gossip of your new culture – what’s next? In short, everything. Discovering a new language opens you up to a whole new world. What will you do with your new language? Travel? Write? Make new friends? Apply to work at Mango? The days of hibernating your way through the winter are over – you’re on to bigger, brighter things.
