Celebrating National Talk Like a Pirate Day At Your Library

It’s that time of year again! National Talk Like a Pirate Day is just around the corner and now’s the time for your library to get in the spirit. This lighthearted holiday is a Mango favorite, and not just because it gives us an excuse to arrive at work in full costume. Our love affair with Talk Like a Pirate Day began back in 2011 when we first debuted our Pirate course. Using Mango’s signature methodology, users learn to start speaking Pirate, learn all about Pirate culture, and everything else you need to know to “parlay” in perfect Pirate.

Even better, our Pirate course is a great way to introduce even more patrons to Mango’s fun, effective language-learning resources, available through your library. Whether this holiday is a cornerstone of your annual calendar or you’re hoping to jump aboard this year, here’s how to transform your library into a crew full of swashbuckling buccaneers in no time.

Raise the Jolly Roger

Translation: spread the word. It’s easy to create excitement around this fun-loving holiday, especially when you have Mango Market on your side. Log on to find, print, and download materials to promote National Talk Like a Pirate Day (and Mango in general!) to your patrons. From banners and web ads to customizable flyers, instantly order and download all of the bright, fun materials you’ll need to create a buzz about the upcoming celebration. We even have Pirate Name Generators to help your patrons embrace their new scallywag identity. Before you know it, you’ll have a library full of Blackbeards roaming the halls, speaking in perfect Pirate.

Beware th’ Booty

We have to warn you: Pirate has become something of a gateway course for learners. In past years, Pirate-inclined patrons have often gone on to hornswaggle from Mango’s 60+ available languages, pillaging in Portuguese and crimping in Croatian. For you, that means National Talk Like a Pirate Day is a great opportunity to introduce new patrons to the Mango resources available to them through their library. While users perfect their Pirate pronunciation, they will simultaneously test-drive Mango’s conversation-based methodology, convenient mobile apps, and user-friendly interface. Plus, delving into Pirate language and culture might just spark in them a desire to keep exploring, reminding them just how much they love learning new languages - especially when it’s this easy and fun.

Join the ranks

Avest matey, many a brave marauder has come before ye, and they’ve set a high bar for awesome pirate parrrrties. Join the ranks of excellence and take a cue from the swashbucklers at these libraries, who broke out their motliest clothing and corniest Pirate jokes for the big day. In true Pirate fashion, River East Library used the spirit of competition to encourage patrons to log on and start learning. Participants were entered to win every seaman’s best friend - a singing parrot (stuffed animal!). Even the lawyers over at Georgetown Law Library took a break from practicing law to study up on the very carousers who broke the most.
What will your pirate legacy be? Head on over to Mango Market for party-planning inspiration and peruse our Pirate-themed promotional materials, available for free to all libraries with an active Mango subscription. Interested in adding Mango to your library? Demo our Pirate course today and find out why Mango is the most popular language-learning resource in public libraries. Ahoy mateys, we’ll see you September 19 for the biggest buccaneer party of the year!
