Here at Mango, we’re extremely pleased (and totally blushing) to announce that we have been selected as one of Metro Detroit’s 2014 Best & Brightest Companies to work for! This recognition is reserved for companies deemed exceptional in areas such as work-life balance, employee education, and diversity. Today, in honor of this special designation, we’d like to take the opportunity to highlight a few of the ways we make Mango such a bright and shiny place to work (and occasionally play).
It all starts with Mango’s bright idea.
Our bright idea and core purpose is to enrich lives with language and culture. We do so by creating interactive online lessons and activities that turn the normally arduous process of learning a new language into a more fun, engaging, and intuitive process. But what really makes Mango’s product unique is the fact that we infuse culture into our language learning. Mango recognizes that a language encompasses a whole lot more than just the words that make it up. That’s why we strive to seamlessly integrate relevant and easily digestible cultural goodness into our product. We want everyone to have the right tools to enjoy learning a foreign tongue, whether it’s Medical Spanish to communicate with your patients or Pirate talk to complement your Halloween costume this year.
Followed by a team of bright-eyed Mangos.
None of what we do at Mango would be possible without all the creative juices our Mangos pour out (in buckets) behind the scenes each day. Luckily for us, Mango’s bright idea attracts some deeply passionate people who are very much captivated by our mission. This also means we practice what we preach at Mango. In fact, the Mango grove is filled with multicultural, linguistically conscious, and open-minded Mangos. Our Mangos alone speak 17 different languages (18 if you include Pirate). And on top of that, each of us carves out time every week to try and master a new language. Don’t be surprised if you hear us cry in Spanish, rejoice in Japanese, and sing in Romanian all in the same day. Working on a team as diverse as Mango's means continuously being challenged to acknowledge each others’ differences and find similarities. This process leads to exciting exchanges of perspectives and insights that in turn help strengthen our relationships, build mutual respect in our Mango community, and ultimately create a better product for our learners.
And a vision for a brighter future.
Mango’s mission is now more relevant than ever before as more and more individuals and companies begin to realize that speaking multiple languages and having cultural intelligence are hugely valuable assets (whether for cognitive stimulation or global economics). Simply relying on one single language is often no longer a viable or smart solution. And even though it may feel like the world is shrinking with globalization, culture still matters. The unfortunate reality, however, is that great gaps in cultural understanding still persist. Mango realizes the transformative power of language and culture learning and is actively working to create a product to truly help make the world a better place to live and learn.
